“ My bitter dating experience” — Actress, Nkechi Blessing

Nollywood actress and entrepreneur Nkechi Blessing has stirred fresh debate on social media after recounting a disappointing dating encounter she described as the final straw in assessing a man’s seriousness.

In a video that has since gone viral, the actress narrated how a man she had been communicating with in the United Kingdom reached out to ask why she suddenly stopped responding to his messages. Unbeknownst to him, Nkechi had just been involved in a minor car accident that left two of her tyres damaged.

She said that when she explained the situation, the man simply asked if she was okay and swiftly ended the conversation — a reaction she found both shocking and telling.

According to Nkechi, the issue was not about financial assistance, as she replaced the tyres herself. Rather, she expected a man who professed interest to show genuine concern or at least remain present during a stressful moment. “Effort is everything,” she stressed.

Hours later, when the man returned to ask if she had sorted the problem, she told him the tyres were already fixed.

The actress added that she has outgrown relationships where men expect her to shoulder major costs, citing an example of the same man encouraging her to buy an expensive flight ticket to London with a promise of reimbursement upon arrival. She said such arrangements no longer appeal to her.

Nkechi contrasted his behaviour with that of a male friend in Abuja who, upon hearing she was coming to the city for work, immediately offered to take care of her accommodation. Even when she insisted on paying her own bills, he refused — a gesture she described as genuine thoughtfulness.

Her account has drawn mixed reactions online: while many praised her for demanding effort and intentionality in relationships, others argued she was being overly expectant.
